Table fare

If you keep it

Good — fried whole or smoked. Sweet mild flavor. Small bones — use a fork to flake.

⚠ Safety & handling

Before you grab it

None — gentle handling species. Hooks are the main risk.

Common mistakes

What anglers get wrong

Confused with topsmelt (smaller, similar shape) — jacksmelt grow much larger (to 17") and have a chunkier jaw.

Did you know

Jacksmelt are the prey base for half the species in the model — halibut, WSB, bonito, calico, even seals. Catching jacksmelt for live bait is one of the best ways to put yourself in front of bigger fish.
